Sensory Integration

At CTS we are here to provide an understanding and awareness of sensory processing, sensory integration, and the sensory systems. Sensory Integration/Sensory Processing is a very useful way to view the needs of a child.

Sensory Integration and Processing may influence the child’s attention, coordination, social participation, and underlying social and behavioural difficulties and violence in schools.

Early identification and treatment will help the child to develop more effectively.

Adopting a team approach is essential to produce a positive outcome and enable the child to take part in the normal activities of childhood, such as playing with friends, enjoying school, eating, dressing, and sleeping.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SENSORY ASSESSMENT

Here at CTS we offer the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT)  by A. Jean Ayres, Ph.D. (Founder of Sensory Integration).

The Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT) measures the sensory integration processes that underlie learning and behaviour. By showing you how children organise and respond to sensory input, SIPT helps pinpoint specific organic problems associated with learning disabilities, emotional disorders, and minimal brain dysfunction.

The SIPT measures tactile, and kinaesthetic perception as well as motor performance. It is composed of the following 17 areas:

1.Space Visualisation
2. Figure-Ground Perception
3. Standing/Walking Balance
4. Design Copying
5. Postural Praxis
6. Bilateral Motor Coordination
7. Praxis on Verbal Command
8. Constructional Praxis
9. Postrotary Nystagmus
10. Motor Accuracy
11. Sequencing Praxis
12. Oral Praxis
13. Manual Form Perception
14. Kinaesthesia
15. Finger Identification
16. Graphesthesia
17. Localisation of Tactile Stimuli

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND TREATMENT

CTS provides tailored treatment to develop the child in all aspects of functional and occupational performance skills and uses Sensory Integration and Sensory Processing skills as part of the child’s treatment.

‘Occupational Therapy treatment and support is not bound to a clinic. Through treatment, development of new skills will evolve.

Through guidance, generalisation, application and integration of these new skills into everyday environments, functional skills will occur.

This needs to be embraced by all to enable the child to succeed in all areas of everyday living, play and access to learning.‘

OT requirements for SI Treatment

  1. Correct Qualifications in a postgraduate SI course.

Provides direct 1 to 1 treatment in a sensory rich setting that has unique equipment that provides a wide range of sensory opportunities.

Includes a therapy evaluation before treatment and is delivered easily, understandable, written form.

• Incorporates parent education an integral part of the treatment programme. Parents need and deserve much more than 5 minutes BUT several dedicated hours for feedback and education should be built into the treatment plan.

Provides written goals for treatment before you begin treatment to assure that everyone agrees about the priorities.

Documents changes with post treatment testing so everyone knows how treatment is working.

Provides intensive treatment (at least 2 times a week) over shorter time duration rather than 1 times per week treatment. Weekly treatment can provide behaviour changes but research suggests that intensive treatment produces lasting neurological changes as well as changes in behaviour.

  1. Uses play and challenges with success to produce change and foster self –esteem. In good , sensory-based OT, children think they are playing.
